Abstract The need to develop sustainable waste management strategies and policies has become increasingly apparent as management, and in some cases mismanagement, of waste can be seen to have a recognisable impact on the global environment. This paper focuses on New York City, which is undergoing dynamic changes to its waste management infrastructure due to what could be regarded as an extreme decision to close the City's main waste management route. As the City prepares a comprehensive waste management plan incorporating new strategies in an attempt to manage its waste, this paper evaluates whether sustainable waste management could be achieved in New York City, or whether the radical changes required make an integrated approach unrealistic.
